Used name look-up.
I don't know about anyone else but I'm no fan of typing a name for a new character only to be told it's already taken. Normally numerous times too until you fall upon an unused name.
Could some form of interface be developed, on the GW website if possible, that allows you to enter a name and check to see if it's already in use? I can't see it being that difficult to implement as the coding is already there in the game at the character naming screen.
Good idea or bad idea? Any thoughts?

Just add the name into your friendslist. A message will appear if the characters name doesnt exist.

wait...I'm confused.
You don't like typing a name in the creation screen, only to find that is already in use. So instead, you want to type in a name somewhere else to find if it is in use? Seems like the same thing to me.
the way it is now:
create character, type name, told it is in use
Your suggestion:
website name checker, type name, told it is in use
what am I missing?

If you check it via the gw.com site, you run the risk of losing that uber awesome name once you get in the game.

usually if your creative enough you dont have this problem...people with no imagination have trouble picking a name thats not already taken and thats why i see so many chars with names like
killer bob
i own you
tom dinggleberry
warrior slayer
i dont know about anyone else but i use online name generators to pick a name, makes them more unique with less of a chance of them being taken. any name ive created using a generator has worked on the first try
